2008 VACATION ASSIGNMENT: DEBATE AND DISCUSSION
Over vacation, you are to read ALL articles posted on our class website. Speak with or email me if you have any difficulty accessing: apennino@shufsd.org
Take notes on your readings as needed. On ____________ we will have a discussion and debate based on the readings. Be able to cite specific evidence from the readings, and from all our assignments and notes from this unit, that support AND contradict the following discussion points:
I. Economic liberalization (free market capitalism) will lose its legitimacy and collapse in the coming decade, and will be replaced by a resurgence of statism, socialism, and corporatism.
II. Democratization will halt, then give way to the spread of authoritarianism, in the coming decades.
III. Globalization will halt, then give way to a resurgence of economic protectionism, cultural balkanization, and isolationism.
IV. Fukuyama’s main thesis was correct: eventually the entire world will embrace liberal democracy as the superior form of human organization.
